The first Noddy book, Noddy goes to Toy Land, was written and created by Enid Blyton and published in 1949. The magical story and colourful illustrations ensured it was an immediate success. Noddy has been personified in a number of television programmes since 1955, but is now better known for the TV series Make Way for Noddy, which boasts 100 x 10 minute episodes. Noddy first featured on the TV as a black and white string puppet; today he is an extremely colourful character that uses computer generated imagery to create and animate Toy Town and all of its residents.
Noddy helps young children discover life’s values through friendship, play and enchanting stories. He lives in a world surrounded by magic, filled with the wonder of discovery, the joys of friendship and the excitement of new experiences.

Noddy is a little wooden boy with a jingly blue hat and nodding head. He lives in the magical world of Toy Land with his friends where, he loves to drive his notorious red and yellow taxi and brand-spanking new aeroplane. He is an open, honest and kind-hearted little boy who can be too trusting of others which, often leads him into trouble. His best friend Big-Ears is always on hand to offer Noddy guidance and support, helping Noddy to think about the rights and feelings of others.

Big-Ears is Noddy’s best friend. He is a wise old gnome and is always on hand to offer Noddy some advice and support. He is approachable, reassuring and always happy to help put things right or explain a complicated situation. Big-Ears rides around Toy Town on his little red bicycle and lives in toadstool house in Toy Town. He is often heard saying “You funny little Noddy!” whenever Noddy gets himself into another muddle.

Tessie Bear is a good friend to Noddy and a popular resident of Toy Town. She is extremely clever, kind and generous, and her gooseberry muffins are to die for! Tessie lives in a cute pink house in Toy Town with her dog Bumpy, who helps her look after the chickens in her back yard, when he’s not jumping around. She drives around Toy Town in her notorious purple car and will always wave hello as she passes.

Mr. Plod helps to keep law and order on the streets of Toy Town, not an easy job when Sly and Gobbo, the naughty goblins, are around! He chases the mischief-makers around Toy Town on his police bicycle, blowing his whistle and shouting “Halt, in the name of Plod!” Once caught he locks them into the Toy Town jail and teaches them an important lesson between what is right and what is wrong. Mr. Plod also ensures that Noddy’s taxi does not break the speed limit whilst he taxi’s people around Toy Town.

Sly and Gobbo are two naughty goblins that live in the dark woods on the edge of Toy Town. They cause no end of mischief in Toy Town and their naughty tricks are generally aimed at innocent little Noddy. They are extremely jealous of his red and yellow taxi and are continually thinking up plans to ‘borrow’ it. Noddy quite often falls for their tricks but Big-Ears and Mr. Plod are around to put things right, so luckily their light-hearted trouble making always backfires.

Bumpy Dog is Tessie Bear’s faithful companion and lives with her in her pink house in Toy Town. He is called Bumpy because he is the bumpiest, jumpiest dog in Toy Town and often gets under the feet of the Noddy and his friends. Bumpy the dog tends to jump in paws first before thinking and you will often here the words “get down bumpy!” when he’s around. Despite his boisterousness Bumpy is extremely friendly and has been know to help Noddy deal with the naughty goblins.
